A trip up Wuzhishan

T his Sunday at 7am it was time for a trip up Wuzhishan (五指山) in the northern parts of Taipei with H and X. Along the Keelung River Park, past the Palace Museum and up along Waishuangxi (外雙溪). From the Palace Museum on, the road’s a veritable bicycle autostrada on a Sunday morning, I’ve never seen so many bicycles at one time in Taipei before. But then, it’s a nice ride. From the exit toward Fengguikou (風櫃口) or Fengguizui (風櫃嘴) depending on what road sign or map you look at, its up, up and away for 1-1.5h.
Up by Fengguizui, there’s a cafe with decent coffee and a much too talkative boss who was not too shy to start wiggling his hips in all directions but mostly back and forth and give us a dance and talk show after having offered free fruit and homebrewed plant juice that was really refreshing. From the outdoor cafe, you can go down to Wanli and continue past Jinshan and the northern cape down to Danshui, a ride fo probably another 70 or 80 km, or you can go down to Neihu via Erluntou mountain (二崙頭山), or you can go back the same way you came, which we did. Back home again after a long and relaxing coffee break once we got rid of the boss, we had made 50km and I had managed 66.5km/h in one of the slopes on the way down.

Facts Follow the Keelung River to the Mingshui Rd (明水路) exit. Leave the river park there, go through the Ziqiang-tunnel, and continue past the Palace Museum. At the Fengguikou exit, take a right. Uphill for 7-8 km, fairly steep at times. A popular place for bikers to exercise, since it’s fairly steep, but not very long.
